Dear Ferrum Friends,
Happy holiday season!
As we celebrated Thanksgiving last month, and look forward to Christmas and Hanukkah in the upcoming weeks, we think of so many things for which we are thankful: a democratic society, the bounty of this beautiful land, the blessings of family and friends, and our wonderful College with its diverse student body and dedicated faculty and staff. We also celebrate the opportunity to discuss, analyze, critique and offer suggestions and recommendations for improvements at the College, in the community and the world. This is in keeping with our emphasis on education, global citizenship and our expanding awareness of one another's beliefs, hopes and dreams. At Ferrum College, we know we can and do make a difference. |

We wish you good health and happiness as you gather together with loved ones during this holy and joyous season. Special prayers are extended to those who are struggling because of difficult economic situations, illness, complicated relationships or other reasons. Let us continue to be a thankful and prayerful community!
Strategic Plan Update
We have been engaged in a semester-long discussion on elements of our updated 2003-2007 Strategic Plan that were presented at our Opening Conference in late August. All areas of the College, including faculty, staff and students, have had an opportunity for input in many of the academic and co-curricular initiatives, strategies and opportunities for improvement as outlined in the Plan. These were developed over the summer and represent an amalgam of "best practice" methods. The Plan, which remains a working document to signify the evolutionary nature of today's higher education climate, was endorsed by faculty and staff in late October and approved by the Board of Trustees at its fall meeting on November 7. In addition, the Board approved a plan to proceed with certain physical plant improvements that have been listed as priorities in our Facilities Master Plan. We will share information about this project with the College community during the next several months. Look for exciting details to come! |
Recent News:
Director of Development
This has been a year of exciting challenges and changes at Ferrum College. The momentum of positive experiences and opportunities keeps growing, and one of the most promising for Ferrum is the naming of new staff members. It is with great pleasure that we announce that Mrs. Lisa Jamison Bowling has accepted the role of Director of Development with the College. We will continue to benefit from Lisa's professionalism and her vision for the College as she takes on these new responsibilities. We have great expectations and many opportunities ahead through our "Raise the Bar" campaign and the goals we are working to achieve. To contact the Development Office call (540) 365-4221 or email Lisa Bowling at lbowling@ferrum.edu.

Water Garden Progress
Water is falling on the campus of Ferrum College, but not in the form of rain. A water garden has been constructed by students, staff and faculty of Ferrum College. The construction project was part of a Landscape Design & Management course led by Professor Trenda Leavitt and Dr. Bob Pohlad, faculty in the Horticulture/Life Sciences Division. The course was designed as an experiential design course, with hands-on design/build projects that involve students in real-world application of design. Experiential education, a mission of President Dr. Jennifer Braaten, enables students to experience the power of ideas to change the world by improving the physical spaces we live and work.
