Mr. Cabell Brand
2005 Recipient of the Honorary Degree in Doctor of Humanities

Mr. Cabell Brand of Salem, Virginia, has long been a tireless advocate for the poor and underserved citizens of southwest Virginia. As a social activist and humanitarian, he is the founder of Total Action Against Poverty (TAP), Seek Education, Explore, Discover (SEEDS), and the Center for International Poverty and Resource Studies.

A highly successful businessman prior to devoting his life full time to the War on Poverty, the scope of Mr. Brand’s work is far reaching. From the United Nations, to the World Bank, to Habitat for Humanity, to Project Head Start – his influence has been felt and his voice has been heard. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church, a devoted husband to his wife, Shirley, and friend and mentor to many.
Mr. Brand has been a supporter of education at every level, and has long been a friend to Ferrum College, in particular working with faculty through the New Century Council Indicators and Benchmarks Committee, which has provided information on sustainable development, including suggesting standards for clean air and water.

The life and works of Mr. Brand have had a tremendous and positive impact in southwestern Virginia. Since this area has been the major beneficiary of his humanitarian efforts, philanthropy and social activism, the College is extraordinarily privileged to bestow upon Mr. Cabell Brand the award of an Honorary Degree in Doctor of Humanities. He truly personifies the Ferrum College motto, “Not Self, But Others.”
