The
campus has been very busy with the construction and renovation involved
with FerrumPLUS!
We have been inspired by the tremendous work accomplished by Food
Services, Housekeeping, Maintenance and the post office staff who
have continued to operate in spite of the construction disruption,
and we are always grateful for the reassuring presence of Campus
Police. We also thank so many of the staff who participated in our
“Commitment to Student Welfare” workshops earlier this
summer. The valuable input generated from these gatherings will
be incorporated into our Strategic
Plan. Special thanks to the Blue
Ridge Institute for curating the traveling “Car
Crazy” exhibit, as well as other traveling
exhibits this summer, and congratulations to the Blue
Ridge Dinner Theatre upon the conclusion of their successful
“touring”season. We also want to particularly thank
our summer program staff for coordinating the multiple youth groups
-- band camps, Jobs Daughters, Roanoke Youth Symphony, leadership
retreats, Girl Scouts of America, soccer camps, etc. -- that make
the Ferrum campus so lively during this time.
In Academic
Affairs, much hard work has continued on the development of our
new “Pathways
to Success” academic program that will be launched in
the fall, an initiative that we are certain will bring the multiple
components of the Ferrum academic program into an integrated and
comprehensive experience for our students. Many of our faculty,
students and staff members have been extremely productive in
other ways this summer as well, traveling for study or pleasure
to far-flung destinations, taking part in various workshops and
conferences and working on individual projects. In particular I
urge all of you to visit the exciting “live
cam” set up by Bob Pohlad where you can view live action
from the Ferrum campus in “real time” from your Internet
connection.
I have been
busier than ever this summer, attending various conferences and
meetings of the myriad professional organizations that are so vital
to the support of our faculty, staff and students and play such
an important role in our educational endeavors. In the space of
less than two months I have traveled from Australia to Florida and
points in between, attending meetings of the Appalachian
College Association (ACA), the Annual
Conference of the United Methodist Church; the Bonner
Foundation; the Council
of Independent Colleges in Virginia (CICV), the International
Association of Methodist Schools, Colleges and Universities
(IAMSCU), the National
College Athletic Association (NCAA); the National
Association of Schools and Colleges of the United Methodist Church
(NASCUMC), and the Virginia
College Fund (VCF). I also visited several foundations during
this time, including the Arthur Vining Davis and the Jessie Ball
duPont foundations.
It is critical
that Ferrum have a presence at all of these events, since these
organizations contribute tremendous support in one way or another
to everything we do as an institution of higher education. Yet,
as much as we value the support of these organizations, your generous
support, as individual friends and alumni, is tremendously important
as well. Alumni giving is at an all time high at Ferrum
and we want to especially thank Institutional Advancement for their
leadership in this effort. Foundations and major donors consider
alumni giving as an important indicator for determining their investment
in institutions. We have a number of exciting
alumni events scheduled across the state this month and hope
that you can join one or more of them.
Ferrum College
is the sum of its parts, and you are the heart, the soul and the
backbone of this wonderful school. May the blessings of these remaining
days of summer continue to be yours. |

Ferrum Watershed
Monitoring, Webcam, Website & Newsletter
Faculty and students at Ferrum College are working with other colleges
and universities (CAWS; ROCA) to study, compare, and better understand
ecological processes operating in small, upland watersheds across
the Southern Appalachians. With funding provided by the Andrew W.
Mellon Foundation and the National Science Foundation in partnership
with the University of Maryland's Appalachian Laboratory, faculty
and students in the Life Science Division at Ferrum College have
instrumented a watershed to monitor and analyze streamflow, precipitation,
soils, vegetation, and a wide range of other ecological parameters.
Students studying Environmental Science, Biology, Horticulture,
and Agriculture use the watershed in their courses, for independent
research projects, and work with faculty on research projects during
the summer. Download the latest Watershed
Newsletter here (PDF file) or take
a look at the new webcam that gives a view of campus and a partial
look at the Alumni Conference Center construction!

Follows New Leaders in its “Pathways to Success” Program
Ferrum College is
pleased to announce the Pathways to Success academic program. In the midst
of exciting renovations and construction projects to the physical campus,
Vice President and Dean of the College Dr. Leslie Lambert has been working
with Ferrum’s faculty on similarly exciting developments in the
college’s academic architecture. In conjunction with this new initiative,
Ferrum College is also pleased to announce the appointment of the leaders
for this exciting new academic direction.
The Pathways to Success
program aims to bring focus to Ferrum College’s mission-derived
motto – “Not self, but others.” The Pathways program
will build upon Ferrum’s focus on integrated and interdisciplinary
programs, tying student-learning experiences in the liberal arts and sciences
and with imbedded service learning and experiential education components.
Further, it will lead students from these foundational learning experiences
into their major programs of study with the goal of helping students gain
knowledge and understanding and, in turn, applying skillfully their understanding
as they make a commitment to impact their communities, the nation and
world. Read

Students and Faculty Study in Brazil
As this e-newsletter hits your inbox, five Ferrum students
and faculty member (and wildlife and forestry expert) Todd
Frederickson are travelling in South America, visiting and
researching in Brazil thanks to an Appalachian College Association
International Seminar Grant and environmental studies project.
The project is entitled, "A Pacific Ocean to Brazil Transect:
Environmental, economic and political issues at subtropical
latitudes in South America: Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, and
Brazil."
Geologically,
this excursion offers a complete transect of a modern mountain
belt that is still rising. The transect ends in an area where
Cretaceous rifting started to form a new ocean basin. This
event was aborted and rifting started anew at the present
margin of the South Atlantic Ocean. The trip will also pass
through important regions for metals and petroleum extraction.
The trip
will introduce the students to the capital cities of Argentina,
Chile, and Paraguay, allowing students to experience significant
diversity in Latin American cultures. There will be numerous
opportunities to discuss the political and social development
of these countries and chances to visit important historical
sites. Of particular historical interest will be the battlefields
near Santiago, Chile where decisive victories were won against
the Spanish during the war for liberation. The
official project site, with itinerary. |
