Course Title: SCI 129 - Human Disease

Term: Fall 1997 (1st - 1/2 semester)

Instructor: Dr. Carolyn L. Thomas

Office: Garber 225; Phone #: 365-4368

Hours in Office: 11-12 AM   MF; 8:30-9:30 AM   TTh; 1-3 PM   MTh

Description: This course covers topics related to human disease.  The causative agents of disease and their effects on organs and organ systems in the body will be studied.  Specific areas of study will be the symptoms, causative agent, epidemiological information and treatment of a variety of diseases.

Detailed Description: This course will introduce students to diseases of the human body caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoans, and helminths.  In addition to diseases caused by parasites, students will study diseases caused by physiological dysfunction of the body, genetic diseases and disorders caused by certain lifestyles.  The students will study the most significant diseases of each organ system.  Symptoms and treatment of these diseases will be studied in addition to the potential for prevention of these diseases.  Epidemiological information, both historical and current, will be studied in addition to the United States Health Department's and World Health Organization's responsibilities requirements for reporting diseases.

Why take this class? The diseases of the human body have long held the fascination of people.  This interest in learning about diseases helps prepare students for practicing preventative measures to not allow these diseases to affect their health now or later.  The information in this course will also prepare the student to become a better informed patient if disease might occur in their lives or the lives of their family.
