Cover Letter Do's and Don'ts


DO

Do follow the rules of layout and format of a standard business letter

Do type on good quality paper.  Your paper should match your resume.

Do take advantage of any link to the employer that can put your foot in the door or give you an edge over the competition.

Do refer to your resume.

Do limit your length to one page.

Do proofread!

Do indicate if you will enclose other documents by placing the word enclosure(s) in the lower left corner of your letter.


DON'TS

Don't use stiff language or phrasing -- avoid vagueness.

Don't overload with the constant use of "I".

Don't develop one letter to send to all employers.  Each letter should be individualized to the organization and position.

Don't be gimmicky in an attempt to be original or clever.  Avoid the use of slang or cliches.

Don't forget to sign your letter.
