Western Virginia Roy Stanley Education Classic to be Held at Ferrum College

7/2/2012

Ferrum College will host Emory & Henry College for the game on September 1.

Ferrum, Va. (June 29, 2012) –Ferrum College held a press conference Friday, June 29 to announce its partnership with Total Action Against Poverty (TAP) and WDBJ-7 in hosting the 2012 Western Virginia Roy Stanley Education Classic football game.  The Panthers will host Emory & Henry College Saturday, Sept. 1, with kickoff slated for 1 p.m. in W.B. Adams Stadium.

First held in September 2000, the Western Virginia Education Classic (WVEC) is played annually to secure ongoing financial support for Project Recovery, TAP’s program aimed at getting dropouts back into school or into remedial/alternative education, job related training, employment or a combination of these.

This year’s WVEC football game has a new name  - the Western Virginia Roy Stanley Education Classic - as TAP and WDBJ-7 memorialize the late Roy Stanley, a WDBJ-7 sportscaster more than 30 years. The Sept. 1 game against Emory & Henry will be Ferrum's second WVEC game, including a 2006 USA South Athletic Conference game against Shenandoah University.

Participating in Friday’s press conference were TAP Senior Vice President and Director Annette Lewis, Roanoke City Councilman and WVEC Steering Committee Chairman Sherman Lea, WDBJ-7 Programming Director Mike Bell, Franklin County Administrator Rick Huff, Ferrum Vice President of Institutional Advancement Kim Blair and Ferrum Head Football Coach Dave Harper.
