Ferrum College Agriculture students have a new opportunity for experiential learning
thanks to the generosity of alumnus and Ferrum supporter Edward “Hutty” Titmus III,
89,’ director of the Titmus Foundation. The newly named “Titmus Agricultural Center,
” the centerpiece of which is an impressive, modern barn, that houses sheep, cattle,
and horses and was built to enhance utilization of the college’s existing 80 acre
farm. There is also a greenhouse located at the Center which gives Ferrum faculty
the opportunity to blend natural science studies and crop studies in one location.
The farm will also feature an organic garden where vegetables and herbs will be grown
for use in the campus dining hall.
The Center was officially dedicated on Friday, May 1st at a recognition luncheon on
campus attended by faculty, staff, students and members of the Ferrum College Board
of Trustees. In keeping with the agricultural theme of the event, Ferrum’s executive
chef, Bo Bernard, and the dining hall staff prepared the luncheon almost entirely
with ingredients provided by local farmers including Sweet Providence Farm of Floyd,
Homestead Creamery of Burnt Chimney, Locust Grove Farm of Check, and Waterbear Mountain
Farm of Floyd.
Titmus, the guest of honor at the ceremony, studied agriculture at Ferrum and is a
farmer from Dinwiddie County, Virginia. The Titmus Foundation supports a wide range
of charitable interests at area colleges and universities. Titmus says the Center
at Ferrum will be a place where students will get valuable hands-on experiences. “Students
need to know that there are colleges and universities other than Virginia Tech where
they can study agriculture.” Titmus explained. “This space will provide Ferrum students
an area where they can develop practical skills that will help to prepare them for
a wide-variety of career opportunities.”
