Neurosurgeon Neal Naff to Be Next Executive in Residence

A Franklin County native, Naff has become one of the foremost authorities in his field.

Ferrum, Va. (March 21, 2011) Dr. Neal Naff, Chief of Neurosurgery at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, Md., will serve as Ferrum College’s Executive in Residence on March  29 & 30.


Naff attended the Virginia Military Institute where he was class president and valedictorian.   He received his M. D. from Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where he was recognized by the National Stroke Association with an award as a national research fellow for his work on brain hemorrhages.  He later became a staff  Neurosurgeon at Walter Reed Army Medical Center where he took on leadership roles in the field of peripheral nerve, cerebrovascular and endovascular surgery.


He was appointed Chief of Neurosurgery at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore in January 2003 and became director of the Cyberknife Radiosurgery Center at Sinai Hospital later that year. He was appointed Chief of Neurosurgery at St. Joseph Medical Center in 2006.  Dr. Naff has faculty appointments at both Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the Uniformed Services University School of Health Services.


“Neal Naff is one of the foremost neurosurgeons in the United States,” said Ferrum College Director of Corporate Relations Tom Cosgrove.  “It will be a unique opportunity for our students and faculty to spend time with Naff during his day as Executive in Residence. 


Although previous Executives in Residence have spent a single day on campus, Naff is spreading his visit over two days to accommodate his busy schedule.


Neal Naff was born and raised in Franklin County.  He is the son of Angelia and Wes Naff Jr.  His brother, Abe serves as Ferrum College Director of Athletics.
