Message Regarding Weekend Off-Campus Incident

10/14/2009

Following an off-campus shooting incident that occurred after midnight, Sunday, October 11, 2009, both Campus police and the Franklin County Sheriff's Department are aggressively continuing their investigation. The incident occurred at an event that was neither sponsored nor sanctioned by Ferrum College. It involved an altercation during which two students were injured by gunshots fired by a non-Ferrum individual who fled the scene. The students were treated at area hospitals and released.

Law enforcement officers, including Ferrum College Police, Franklin County deputies, Virginia State Police and members of other law enforcement agencies, responded to the situation within 2 minutes. After conferring with officers who investigated the immediate circumstances surrounding the incident, it was determined that the level of concern did not warrant an emergency alert to the general College community. For informational purposes the campus was subsequently notified of the incident via e2campus.

Student concerns or questions over this incident can be taken to the College Police Department, the Dean of Students, the Vice President for Student Affairs, or the College Counseling Office.

The College remains committed to the safety of its students, faculty, and staff, and will not tolerate illegal actions or behaviors.
