Discards & Donations Program generates Literacy Program and Library Funding.

Ferrum, Va. (Dec. 20, 2011) – Ferrum College’s Stanley Library recently negotiated a contract with Better World Books’ Library Discards & Donation Program, which will help the library manage its book collection while generating a new source of revenue.

With its Library Discards & Donations Program, Better World Books collects discarded and donated books from more than 900 libraries nationwide and resells them through numerous online marketplaces. Through this and other programs, Better World Books has raised well over $10 million dollars for global literacy and libraries and reused or recycled 80 million pounds of books.

“The whole philosophy of Better World Books and what they are trying to do fits so well with the programs and goals of Ferrum College, perhaps with environmental awareness and literacy ranking at the top,” said Head of Technical Services Peggie Barker, who is enthusiastic about the new partnership. “Stanley Library typically receives several donations of books each school year and this gives us an avenue for sharing titles that we don’t add to our collection.”

Barker, who recently sent a second book shipment to Better World Books, notes that any revenue received from the sale of these books will be invested in new titles for Stanley Library.
