Ferrum College to Host Wrestling Facility Open House Feb. 1

Ferrum, Va. (January 24, 2013) - Ferrum College will host an open house of its newly-renovated wrestling facility Friday, Feb. 1, at 4:00 p.m.  The facility is located inside the Norton Field House, which is adjacent to the Hank Norton Athletic Center.  Located within the facility are coaches’ offices, a large meeting room/study lounge, storage rooms, locker rooms and the new wrestling practice room.

President Dr. Jennifer L. Braaten, Director of Athletics Abe Naff and Wrestling Coach Nate Yetzer will make comments and be available throughout the afternoon.  The building will be open for tours, and light refreshments will be available.  Following the program, the Ferrum wrestling team's practice from 5:30-6:30 p.m. will be open to the public.

Ferrum announced in June 2012 that it would start a collegiate wrestling program.  Nate Yetzer was introduced as the College's Head Wrestling Coach at a press conference July 6.  Yetzer successfully recruited 15 student-athletes to wrestle at Ferrum between July 6 and August 30, and another three transferred to Ferrum in January.  Ferrum's roster had included as many as 25 wrestlers this season, and currently has 16 wrestlers.  Recruiting is strong and Yetzer expects a dozen or more wrestlers to enroll in time for the College's first-ever season of varsity wrestling starting in the fall of 2013.

Word of Ferrum's program has spread well through the wrestling community.  Recently, Amateur Wrestling News picked up on it and the magazine will carry a nice feature story in its February 12, 2013 issue, including a cover spread.  Located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, AWN was first published in the mid-1950s and is the oldest publication devoted to all phases of amateur wrestling.  Information about that will be coming soon.

Yetzer came to Ferrum after six seasons as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech under Head Coach Kevin Dresser.  He helped lead the Hokies to an 11th-place finish at the 2012 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.  Prior to his work at Virginia Tech, Yetzer was an assistant coach at Div. I Binghamton University in New York.  Yetzer was a Div. I All-American at Edinboro University in Pennsylvania, where he placed 8th in the 174-lb weight class in 2004.

Ferrum's 2012-13 wrestling team has competed in five tournaments thus far as a club-level program.  Yetzer will have his team at the Builder Invitational this Saturday, Jan. 26, in Newport News, Virginia.  The Panthers will close out the season at the  2013 National Collegiate Open Wrestling Championship, to be held Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Arthur Ashe Center in Richmond, Virginia.

The public is invited to join us for the Wrestling Open House.  For more information, please contact Sports Information Director Gary Holden at (540) 365-4306 or  gholden@ferrum.edu.
