Ferrum College to Begin Offering Men’s Swimming Athletic
Women’s swimming was added in 2011 and the College is
preparing to add a Division III men’s program as well
Ferrum, Va. (Nov. 26, 2012) – Ferrum College
announced today that men’s swimming has been added as an
intercollegiate sport beginning in the fall of 2013. The move
follows on the heels of the creation of a women’s swim
program in 2011. Current women’s swimming coach Tom
Calomeris will coach both teams.
“We have a proud athletic tradition and this will allow us
to offer another option to our student-athletes,” said
Athletic Director Abe Naff.
Men’s swimming is being offered as a club sport for the
duration of the 2012-2013 school year. The team will commence
intercollegiate competition with the fall 2013 term.
“There are a number of strong high school and club swim
programs in the region,” said Calomeris. “This is
an opportunity for young men who enjoy the sport to continue to
compete while getting a first class education at Ferrum
The Ferrum College pool underwent a significant renovation in
2011 with new lighting, electronic timing and new starting blocks.
Men’s and women’s swimming join recently added
men’s wrestling and men’s lacrosse, bringing the
College’s number of athletic program offerings to 19.
Ferrum College Dean of Admissions, Gilda Woods said that
counselors recently began advising potential incoming students of
the opportunity. “We think swimming, a lifetime
activity, is a perfect fit for our students,” said Woods.
