Ferrum College SIFE Team Crowned Regional Champions for 23rd Consecutive Year.

The Ferrum team will head to the SIFE USA National Exposition in Kansas City after winning the regional competition in Charlotte.

Ferrum, Va. (April 3, 2012) – The Ferrum College Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team will head to the SIFE USA National Exposition on May 22 in Kansas City, MO, after their 23rd consecutive regional championship win on March 27 in Charlotte, NC.

“Winning the SIFE USA Regional Competition for the 23rd year running is an impressive accomplishment! It is a testament to the quality of our students’ projects and their hard work,” said Ferrum College Provost Dr. Leslie Lambert. “Ferrum’s SIFE students are leaders on our campus and beyond. They are making a difference as they apply the disciplinary knowledge, skills and abilities they are learning at Ferrum. We are very proud of this year's team."

This year, the Ferrum College SIFE team worked on fifteen different outreach projects, which included financial education, women’s empowerment, community beautification, sustainability, and other programs designed to help area small businesses.

"All of our projects were based on ‘empowering’ people to do great things, such as empowering battered women so they feel confident to tackle the days to come, empowering business owners to re-engage their consumers and make better products, and empowering future entrepreneurs to reach their dreams of starting their own businesses," explained Ferrum College SIFE President John Puckett.

To win the regional competition, a panel of eight SIFE team members spoke about the year’s projects and answered a variety of challenging questions posed by a panel of judges.

“I am very proud of our SIFE Team. Even though we had six new members who were making presentations for the first time, they did an outstanding job presenting our community projects and answering tough questions from the fifteen business professionals judging the competition,” said Ferrum College Business Professor Dr. Demetri Tsanacas, who started the SIFE program at Ferrum College in 1988.

An international non-profit organization founded in 1975, SIFE has 1,600 active teams on college and university campuses in 39 countries. Through projects that improve the lives of people worldwide, the more than 57,000 university students, academic professionals and industry leaders who participate in SIFE are demonstrating that individuals with a knowledge and passion for business can be a powerful force for change.
