Honored senior Mike Walter is the namesake for the annual award given to the senior lacrosse player best demonstrating unselfishness, hustle, desire and team building.

Ferrum, Va. (April 23, 2012) – On Saturday, April 7, the Ferrum College men’s lacrosse coaching staff and team members honored their first-ever graduating senior lacrosse player, Mike Walter. Walter received the annual senior award, which was named in his honor, prior to the start of the final home men’s lacrosse game.

“The Mike Walter Senior Award will annually recognize a senior who best demonstrates the qualities of unselfishness as a player, hustle, desire and the ability to develop team camaraderie,” explained Ferrum College Assistant Athletic Director Gary Holden.

Walter, who is from Ashburn, Va., graduated from Massanutten Military Academy, where he was captain of the lacrosse team and played football and basketball. He began his collegiate lacrosse career at Pfeiffer University, where he played for two years, prior to transferring to Ferrum College and joining the Panther lacrosse program.

Walter puts a passion for lacrosse into coaching two youth teams during his spare time. He plans to serve as a volunteer student assistant coach next fall at Ferrum as he completes work on his degree in Health and Human Performance Management, which he will earn in December 2012. Walter is the son of Leanne and Mike Walter. His sister Chelsea plays soccer for Longwood University, while his brother Will, also a lacrosse player, will join the Ferrum College lacrosse program as a freshman next fall.
