Ferrum College Launches Media and Communication Major and Minor

9/25/2012

The College started the media and communication minor in September 2012 with the major to begin in September 2013.

Ferrum, Va. (September 26, 2012) – Students at Ferrum College will soon be stepping up to the microphone, or in front of the camera, or into the edit suite, as the College announced a new minor and major in media and communication. Ferrum began offering a minor in media and communication during the Fall 2012 term, with the major set to begin in fall of 2013.

“The Media and Communication program is for students who are interested in pursuing careers and further education in such areas as radio and television broadcasting, multimedia journalism, public relations, corporate communications, audio recording, film-making, and online media creation,” explained Dr. Karl Roeper, assistant professor of media studies. “The program has been designed to help students assimilate the knowledge, skills, and production ethics that will enable them to create high quality media-borne messages, and advance their careers.”

The curriculum will give students a broad overview of the uses and effects of media and media’s role in society. In addition to a variety of introductory classes, media majors will have the option to study digital photography, documentary photography, computer graphics, voice and diction, web page design, public speaking, and TV programming and production, among other subjects. Numerous “hands on” or experiential options will also be offered including internships, practicum courses and clubs such as the campus Iron Blade newspaper and Ferrum Radio. A full listing of available media studies courses is available at www.ferrum.edu/academics/arts_humanities/media_communications.html.

“The media landscape is changing quickly and we want to give our students a chance to be a part of those changes, and to be able to find meaningful work when they graduate,” said Ferrum College President Jennifer L. Braaten.
