Jones, Ph.D., Director of Instructional Design and Technology at Ferrum College, has authored a chapter in a new publication The connection to the 21st Century Workforce: Technology and Engineering Education.  Dr. Jones presented her work at the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association 73rd annual conference on “Preparing the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Workforce” in Minneapolis last month.Virginia Jones

The publication provides a snapshot of the current state of the economy and workforce, and includes the identification and requirements of knowledge and abilities for 21st century STEM occupations, with an emphasis on how technology and engineering education programs can be taught in exciting ways that motivate learners to pursue STEM occupations.

Dr. Jones’s chapter, entitled Technological and Engineering Literacy at the Elementary Level, notes that technological literacy must begin at an early age to assist learners in building a strong understanding and application of the technology framework of their world.  She writes that learners at the elementary-school level already use computers or computer-aided toys and games.
