Ferrum College Dining Services Receives NACUFS Highest National Honor

Dining Services personnel traveled to Boston earlier this summer to receive the gold medal award.

Ferrum, Va. (August 23, 2012) – Earlier this year the National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS) awarded Ferrum College Dining Services a Gold Medal in the Multiple Concepts/Marketplace category, recognizing the College’s Hot Dog Cart, a campus favorite, and the Crazy Cuke food truck, which serves freshly prepared wraps and other healthy options.

The Gold Medal is the highest national distinction bestowed to a college or university by NACUFS and entries are judged by dining services professionals and peers from around the country. “We might be small and rural, but we are ahead of the game and everyone knows where and who Ferrum College is now,” said Catering Manager Alyson Seidel.

The College’s award winning entry included menu variations, facility design, marketing, nutrition and wellness information, as well as photographs, customer service response, and “wow” factor details. Seidel, Dining Services Operations Manager Kim Allen and Food Court Manager Wendi Major compiled the College’s submission and in July the trio traveled to Boston to receive the award during the NACUFS National Conference.

“I am overjoyed that I had the opportunity to work with our team on a project that gained national recognition for Ferrum College and Ferrum College Dining Services,” said Allen.

Major underscored the importance of the teamwork that resulted in the NACUFS gold medal. "This award has been the culmination of many images, thoughts, and ideas, brought forth in a successful effort of teamwork," she said.

Director of Dining Services Mike Martin agreed saying, “I am very proud of the individual efforts and team work ethic of our Dining Services staff who have driven Dining Services to be the best it can be. It is this collective spirit that has catapulted Ferrum to the forefront of the NACUFS organization.”

“This recognition is very well deserved,” said Ferrum College president Jennifer Braaten. “Our students, faculty and staff have the opportunity every day to enjoy a wide variety of delicious, healthy eating options and we are delighted that Dining Services has received this prestigious honor.”
