“I can think of no better way to mark our Centennial year than by celebrating the
accomplishments of these wonderful young men and women,” said Ferrum College president
Jennifer Braaten, speaking about the class of 2013, one of Ferrum’s largest graduating
classes in recent years. “They worked so hard to reach this momentous day in their
lives and that of their families and friends. I am not only proud of them, but also
of our faculty and staff who taught, nurtured, mentored and supported them in myriad
ways through their undergraduate years.”
During his commencement address, Dr. Mescon spoke to graduates about perseverance,
positivism, and activism. He advised students to learn to think, to concentrate on
managing their own destiny, to enjoy the journey, to use their time efficiently, and
to recognize that positivism depends upon their own sense of well-being. Dr. Mescon
also stressed the importance of expressing gratitude whenever possible. He told students,
"Thank you are two of the most powerful words."
Among the day’s award recipients was Allen DeHart '54, who received the Ferrum College
Beckham Medallion. Named after the College's first president Dr. Benjamin M. Beckham,
the Beckham Medallion is the highest honor bestowed upon an alumnus. DeHart, who exemplifies
the College motto “Not Self, But Others”, gifted the 172-acre DeHart Botanical Gardens
in Patrick County to the College and was honored for his loyalty to the College.
Graduates participated in a traditional Baccalaureate service on Friday evening in
Vaughn Chapel. The service concluded with a candlelight ceremony at Hart International
Plaza to symbolize the light of knowledge that the new graduates will carry forth
into the world.
