Ferrum College Awarded $125,000 Jessie Ball duPont Fund Grant
The College will use the money to fund its Green Revolving Loan Fund and partially
support a new Energy Manager.
Ferrum, Va. (May 17, 2013) – Ferrum College announced today that it has been awarded a $125,000 Jessie Ball duPont
Fund grant, $100,000 of which will go toward establishing a green revolving fund,
which will include a $35,000 College match, to leverage funding for energy conservation
projects. The additional $25,000 in duPont funding will be put toward hiring a full-time
energy manager, a position for which the College will also contribute matching funds.
“We are most grateful for the support of the Jessie Ball duPont Fund to Ferrum College.
The duPont Fund continues to provide leadership to all of us in the higher education
sector and help so many of us attain the next level in improving access, increasing
diversity, ensuring student success, promoting economic development and entrepreneurial
initiatives, and building better and stronger campuses and communities. We are all
most appreciative of their partnership with us to fulfill our mission,” said Ferrum
College President Jennifer Braaten.
As a College with one of the oldest environmental programs in the nation, environmental
changes and impacts have long been a concern for Ferrum College. In 2007, President
Braaten signed the American College and University President’s Climate Commitment
and the College began to reduce energy usage and CO2 emission. After an energy audit
of all major facilities yielded numerous energy saving recommendations, the College
joined the Jessie Ball duPont Fund in Phase I of their energy funding to install additional
submeters, complete lighting retrofits, and implement many energy conservation efforts
in the campus community. The new Jessie Ball duPont “Green Revolving Fund” is an opportunity
for the College to realize even more of the energy audit recommendations and efficiently
implement energy conservation projects in a fiscally responsible manner.
“This grant is tremendous news for Ferrum College and our efforts to conserve energy.
Not only will the initial funds provided by the duPont Foundation accomplish an immediate
energy conservation need, the savings from this project will replenish the College’s
Green Revolving Loan Fund to provide resources for other energy related projects.
Going forward, savings from funded projects will help to grow and perpetuate the Fund,”
explained College Senior Vice President for Administration Bobby Thompson.
