Blue Ridge Dinner Theatre Offers Free Tickets to Kids Who Read

Students who read the classic, ‘Heidi,’ will get the chance to see the story transported from the Alps to the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Ferrum, Va. (June 27, 2011) – The Blue Ridge Dinner Theatre at Ferrum College is partnering with local libraries in an effort to encourage children to read a classic book this summer.  Students who read Johanna Spyri’s classic children’s novel, Heidi, will receive a voucher to see R. Rex Stephenson and Emily Rose Tucker’s new adaptation of Heidi that will be opening at the Sale Theatre in August.

The Blue Ridge Regional Library, Stanley Library at Ferrum College, and both Franklin County Public Libraries as well as the Ferrum College Bookstore will are participating in the program.

“We think this is an entertaining way to show children that reading and theatre are as interesting as many of the more modern activities that compete for their time,” said Stephenson.   He added,  “They might even gain a new appreciation for our Blue Ridge Mountains.” The play transports this favorite story to the Blue Ridge Mountains and contains a number of traditional and new songs to reinforce the classic story.

Johanna Spyri labeled Heidi as a book "for children and those who love children." It’s a sentiment shared by the participating libraries and the Blue Ridge Dinner Theatre.

“We hope that young readers enjoy the book and, then, appreciate seeing the characters come to life on the stage,” said Blue Ridge Dinner Theatre Executive Director Jody Brown.

Readers can begin now to earn their vouchers. The Blue Ridge Dinner Theatre’s production will preview August 2, will have matinee performances on August 3 and 4, and evening performances on August 5 and 6.
