2014 RecycleMania

Recycling MapRecycleMania 2014 begins February 2! This is a competition between schools to make the biggest increase in campus recycling by March 29th.

Sunday, February 2, 2014 – Saturday, March 29, 2014

Make sure you are recycling all of your plastic bottles and aluminum cans, cardboard, and white paper so Ferrum can be #1!

The recycling program was instituted in the Spring of 2012 through a trial run by two seniors in Environmental Planning and Development as part their project. With the help of the Office of Sustainability white paper recycling was instituted. Using RecycleMania as our benchmark tool, we were able to get the recycling program off the ground. In the span of just two years the college now collects white paper, cardboard, cans and bottles and collaborates with Ferrum Elementary and Callaway Elementary to allow the elementary schools to recycle cardboard, paper and plastic. The cardboard recycling helps divert waste from the cafeteria in addition to the composting program which has reduced the number of times it is required to empty the trash compacter behind Franklin Hall. Starting this past Fall, plastic bottle and aluminum can recycling began due to 50 new recycling bins from the Keep America Beautiful Bin Grant.

Ferrum has participated in RecycleMania for two consecutive years and won an award both years. In Spring of 2012, Ferrum received a Most Improved Paper Recycling Award. In Spring of 2013, Ferrum College won the Waste Minimization Award – Game Day Basketball.

During RecycleMania, Sustainability Assistants Charisse Perry, Trey Ousterhaut, and Thomas Campbell and Eco-Reps Jordan Clark and Kyra Schultz will weigh and track the recycling.

We urge everyone to first reduce the amount of waste created and recycle as much as possible. Send an email to flash@ferrum.edu with any questions.
