Ferrum, Va. (Jan. 20, 2014) – Ferrum College is pleased to announce the first “Celebrating Our Founders Day” event on Sat., Feb. 8, 2014, which will include its annual Stop Hunger Now community-wide volunteer meal packaging effort. This will be the seventh year when churches of all denominations, community groups such as service clubs and scout troops, and Ferrum students, faculty and staff come together at the College to help alleviate worldwide hunger in a tangible way. This year’s goal is to package 50,000 nutritious meals in two hours from 10 a.m. to 12 Noon at the campus YMCA. The volunteers are also invited to take part in a service of worship and song at 9 a.m. in the College’s Vaughn Chapel, and enjoy an informal “Soup Supper” at the YMCA immediately following the meal packaging.

Stop Hunger Now is an international hunger relief agency that distributes food and other lifesaving aid to children and families in countries worldwide. Troy Henderson, Stop Hunger Now program manager in Lynchburg, thanked the February 8 volunteers in advance for their upcoming work and generosity. “Stop Hunger Now has had the great privilege of working with Ferrum College students, faculty, staff and local church and community groups over the past years,” he said. “Their hard work and generosity has given sustenance and hope to thousands of children around the world.” Henderson noted that this year’s meals are likely to go to schools in Haiti or Africa where the need is great and every packaged meal helps save lives and offers hope for the future.

Ferrum College President Jennifer Braaten hopes the February 8 event will inaugurate a new Ferrum tradition. “By incorporating the first ‘Celebrating Our Founders Day’ with our long-time partnership with Stop Hunger Now, we are honoring and commemorating our selfless founders in a profound and appropriate way,” said Braaten. “Those early visionaries embodied sacrifice and inspired our motto, ‘Not Self, But Others.’ This event, supported by generous donations of time, talent and funds from church members, community organizations and the campus, proves that our historic motto has continued to flourish in the extraordinary selflessness of our steadfast friends of Ferrum.”
