Virginia’s Bordley Named Women's Lacrosse Player of the Year

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Virginia fourth-year defender Claire Bordley was named the state Player of the Year by the Virginia Association of Sports Information Directors (VaSID), the organization announced today. Bordley was honored following a vote of the members; she is the fifth consecutive Cavalier to be named the state Player of the Year.

A pair of members of the William & Mary lacrosse program, head coach Christine Halfpenny and rookie midfielder Grace Golden, were also honored as VaSID announced the 2008 award recipients. Bordley and Golden were also both named to the 12-member first team, University Division. Virginia led all schools with eight players between the two teams, including three on the first and five on the second team. Both George Mason and Richmond both claimed three first team honorees; William & Mary and the Patriots each had four student-athletes selected for one of the two teams.

Bordley was a consensus first team All-American after earning the honors from womenslacrosse.com, insidelacrosse.com, and the IWLCA/US Lacrosse. A three-time ACC Champion after helping the Cavaliers win a third consecutive title in 2008, Bordley was a member of the 2008 All-ACC Tournament team after earning All-ACC honors for the first time in her career this season.

Golden was a member of the womenslacrosse.com National All-Rookie team after helping the Tribe earn the top seed in the 2008 CAA Tournament and a top-20 ranking during the season. The CAA Rookie of the Year was also named a first-team All-Conference selection after leading William & Mary in ground balls and caused turnovers.

Halfpenny mentored the Tribe to the top seed in the CAA Tournament and the right to host the event after William & Mary won seven of their last nine regular season games, an amazing second-half turnaround after posting a 2-6 record in the first eight games of the season. Halfpenny saw the Tribe’s return to the national polls as William & Mary was ranked as high as 18th nationally.

All-State teams are selected by active members of the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association.  For more information, please visit the VaSID site at
