NEWPORT NEWS,
VA. – Christopher Newport University won 69.2% of its
athletic contests in the 2008-09 athletic season to win the
Virginia Sports Information Directors Association College
Division All-Sports Survey. This marks the fifth time since
2000-01 that the Captains have won the overall award.
The survey
ranks all 27 non-NCAA Division I schools in the state by
overall winning percentage. This is the first overall win
for the Captains since the 2004-05 season.
Finishing
second this year was Washington & Lee University with a
65.20% winning percentage, followed by Roanoke College
(64.84%), last year’s winner University of Mary Washington
(63.24%) and Bridgewater College (60.56%).
The Captains
swept the overall, men’s sports and women’s sports rankings
this year as the women won just over 73% of its contests and
the men won just under 64%. Washington & Lee took second in
the women’s rankings (69.2%) while Bluefield College was
second in the men’s rankings (62.27%).
Southern
Virginia University topped the state in national tournament
appearances with nine, followed by Christopher Newport with
eight and Washington & Lee with seven.
