Singletary, Larranaga,
James Earn Men's Basketball All-State Honors
RICHMOND, Va. –Virginia sophomore Sean Singletary was named
the State Player of the Year to headline the 2005-06
University Division Virginia All-State Men’s Basketball Team,
in voting by the Virginia Sports Information Directors
(VaSID). George Mason’s Jim Larranaga was selected Coach of
the Year and James Madison freshman Juwann James was named
Rookie of the Year.
2006 VaSID University Division All-State Men's Basketball Team
Singletary, a 6-0 guard from Philadelphia, averaged 17.7
points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists. Singletary was First
Team All-ACC and First Team All-District. He scored a
career-high 35 points with six rebounds, six steals and four
assists against Gonzaga.
Larranaga led the Patriots to the NCAA Final Four and was one
of five finalists for the Claire Bee Award. Mason was 27-8
overall and 15-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The
Patriots finished in a tie for first in the league and earned
their first at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
James, a forward from Jacksonville, Fla., led the Dukes with
12.7 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest. He was the CAA
Rookie of the Year and a Freshman All-American by
Collegeinsider.com. James scored in double figures in 21 of
his 27 games.
Singletary was joined on the All-State first team by Liberty
junior guard Larry Blair (22.6 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 2.7 apg), VCU
senior forward Nick George (16.9 ppg, 5.1 rpg), Radford senior
guard Whit Holcomb-Faye (23.1 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 4.0 apg) and
George Mason senior forward Jai Lewis (13.7 ppg, 7.8 rpg).
George was first team All-State a year ago, while Blair was a
second-team selection.
The All-State second team consisted of George Mason senior
forward Lamar Butler (11.9 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 2.2 apg), Virginia
Tech junior forward Coleman Collins (14.5 ppg, 6.8 rpg),
Virginia Tech junior guard Zabian Dowdell (15.3 ppg, 3.1 rpg,
3.4 apg), Old Dominion senior forward Alex Loughton (14.0 ppg,
7.7 rpg) and Virginia junior guard J.R. Reynolds (17.0 ppg,
3.1 rpg, 3.1 apg). Loughton was State Player of the Year a
season ago. He and Dowdell were first-team All-State a year
ago.
All-State teams are selected by active members of the Virginia
Sports Information Directors Association.
