Devvarman Named Men's Tennis Player
of the Year for Third Straight Season
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The University of Virginia Cavaliers
headlined the Men’s Tennis – University Division – All-State
awards selected by the Virginia Sports Information Directors
(VaSID). For the third straight season, senior Somdev
Devvarman and head coach Brian Boland were named the State
Player and Coach of the Year, the organization announced on
June 25. Radford freshman Ivan Salec garnered the VaSID
Rookie of the Year honor.
2008
VaSID University Division All-State Men's Tennis Team
Devvarman was the 2007 and 2008 ITA National Player of the
Year and won the NCAA Singles Championship each of the last
two seasons. The All-American in both singles and doubles
was ranked No. 1 throughout the 2007-08 season and amassed a
remarkable 44-1 singles ledger, including a 25-0 mark at the
No. 1 spot in dual matches. He ended the year on a Virginia
school-record 36-match winning streak. His list of
accomplishments include the 2008 ITA/Farnsworth National
Senior Player of the Year, 2008 ACC Player of the Year, 2008
NCAA All-Tournament Team (No. 1 singles), 2008 ITA National
Team Indoor MVP, ITA National Team Indoors All-Tournament
Team (No. 1 singles) and the 2008 ITA National Indoor
Singles Champion.
Boland won the state coach of the year accolade for the
third straight season after being named the ITA National
Coach of the Year. He guided the Cavaliers to an impressive
32-1 mark and a semifinal appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Virginia was ranked No. 1 throughout the regular season and
finished the year at the No. 2 spot in the ITA rankings.
Boland also guided UVA to the 2008 ITA National Team Indoor
Championship as well as the 2008 ACC regular season and
tournament championships.
Devvarman headlined the VaSID First Team choices, joining a
pair of teammates in doubles partner and senior Treat Huey
as well as junior Dominic Inglot. W&M senior Alex Cojanu
joined Devvarman and Huey as repeat first-team all-state
selections from the 2007 campaign. Senior Albert Larregola
of Virginia Tech and junior Martin Sayer of Radford rounded
out the first team honorees in singles. On the doubles side,
Virginia had a pair of teams honored on the first team as
Devvarman and Huey along with the freshman team of Sanam
Singh and Michael Shabaz garnered the honor. Cojanu and
sophomore Keziel Juneau of William and Mary rounded out the
first team doubles selections.
Salec headlined the VaSID Second Team in singles along with
garnering the state rookie of the year distinction. He was
the Big South Freshman of the Year and received
all-conference laurels in both singles and doubles. Salec
turned in an impressive singles mark of 30-4, playing
primarily at the No. 2 position.
Joining Salec on the second team was Virginia senior Ted
Angelinos, Virginia Tech junior Nicolas Delgado de Robles,
VCU senior Damien Lacombe, Old Dominion senior Alex Seleznev
and Norfolk State junior Miroslav Vlek. The doubles second
team consisted of Inglot and Houston Barrick of Virginia,
Sayer and Zack Watson of Radford, Emil Lindgren and
Sebastien Ripoll of VCU and the William and Mary team of
Cojanu and Dominic Pagon.
All-State teams are selected by active members of the Virginia
Sports Information Directors Association. For more
