Sheridan, McFarland Receive top VaSID
Baseball Honors
Phelps, Schwimer Also Garner Awards
BLACKSBURG,Va. -- William & Mary first baseman Mike Sheridan
and James Madison head coach Spanky McFarland captured top
honors on the University Division All-State Baseball team
chosen by the Virginia College Sports Information Directors
(VaSID). Sheridan was selected as the Player of the Year,
while McFarland won the Coach of the Year award.
Additionally, Virginia’s Michael Schwimer was chosen as the
Pitcher of the Year and Turner Phelps from James Madison was
selected as the Rookie of the Year.

Division All-State Baseball Team
Sheridan, a fifth round draft pick by Tampa Bay in the 2008
MLB Draft, was a third team American Baseball Coaches
Association (ABCA) All-American and also a Louisville
Slugger All-American. He ranked among the nation’s top 20 in
batting average (.423), hits (96), RBI (72), total bases
(169) and toughest to strike out. Additionally, Sheridan was
among the CAA leaders in 10 offensive categories and set
single-season school records for hits, runs, RBI and
doubles.
McFarland, in his 11th season at James Madison, was named
the VaSID Division I Baseball Coach of the Year after
directing the Dukes to a 39-19 season, including a trip to
the NCAA tournament.
Schwimer, a 14th round selection by Philadelphia in the 2008
MLB draft, was named to the National Collegiate Baseball
Writers Association (NCBWA) All-America third team and to
the ABCA All-Atlantic Region first team after tying the
school single-season record with 14 saves.
Phelps was named to the NCBWA Freshman All-American second
team after posting an 8-0 record with a 3.87 ERA. He was a
member of the CAA All-Rookie team and was named to the CAA
All-tournament team after pitching his first career complete
game in a 6-1 win over Old Dominion in the tourney opener.
Scott Krieger (George Mason) and Greg Miclat (Virginia) were
repeat selections on the first team, while Tim Park (William
& Mary) was also on the first team after being named to the
second team last year. Radford’s Alex Gregory was named to
the second team of the VaSID squad for the second
consecutive year.
James Madison, Virginia and William & Mary led the way with
three players on the 12-man first team, while George Mason,
Richmond and VMI each had one player selected. Including
second team selections, Virginia and William & Mary each had
a total of four players named, followed by James Madison
with three. George Mason, Old Dominion, Radford and VMI each
had two selections, while Liberty, Longwood, Norfolk State,
Richmond and Virginia Tech each had one member on the team.
All-State teams are selected by active members of the Virginia
Sports Information Directors Association. For more
