Virginia's Devvarman,
ODU's Srugo Headline Men's Tennis All-State Team
Cavalier Head Coach Brian Boland Named State Coach of the
Year
WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- University of Virginia sophomore
Somdev Devvarman was named the Virginia Sports Information
Directors (VaSID) Men's Tennis University Division Player of
the Year, in a recent vote by the state's sports information
directors. Also earning top honors in the state was Old
Dominion freshman Harel Srugo who was named rookie of the year
and Virginia's Brian Boland, who was voted as the state's
coach of the year. This is the first time that VaSID has
sponsored an all-state team in tennis. The organization's
university division includes all of the state's 14 NCAA
Division I institutions.
2006 VaSID University Division All-State Men's Tennis Team
Devvarman posted a 31-13 singles record this season and ended
the year ranked eighth in the nation in the final Fila NCAA
Division I Collegiate Tennis Rankings. He advanced to the
finals of the NCAA Singles Championship last month, earning
ITA All-American and All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors.
Devvarman was named the 2006 ITA Mideast Region Player to
Watch and had 20 wins over nationally ranked singles
opponents. In addition to earning first team all-state honors
in singles, he was named to the commonwealth's second team in
doubles with Treat Huey, after a season in which the pair
posted a 22-9 record and were ranked as high as 11th in the
nation.
Srugo ended the year ranked 26th in the nation in singles,
with a 22-7 record in singles and a 19-6 mark in doubles,
earning first team all-state honors in both categories. He was
named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year and
Co-Player of the Year, and was also selected as the most
outstanding performer at the conference tournament. A first
team All-CAA pick in both singles and doubles, Srugo advanced
to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in singles and also
participated in the NCAA Doubles Tournament.
Boland earned state coach of the year honors after leading
Virginia to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the
second straight season. The Cavaliers ended the season with a
24-9 record, their fourth consecutive 20-win campaign, and
finished the year ranked eighth in the nation. A finalist for
ITA National Coach of the Year honors, Boland led Virginia to
a regular season ACC title for the third straight season.
Joining Devvarman and Srugo on the all-state first team in
singles are Arnaud Lecloerec (Virginia Commonwealth), Arvid
Puranen (Virginia Tech), Rylan Rizza (Virginia) and Martin
Sayer (Radford). Earning first team honors in doubles are
Lecloerec/Petr Olsak (VCU), Nick Meythaler/Rizza (Virginia)
and Aleksandr Seleznev/Srugo (ODU).
Making the all-state second team are Mehdi Benhammou
(Radford), Henrique Cancado (ODU), Huey, Eidy Igarashi (ODU),
Colin O¹Brien (William and Mary) and Doug Stewart (Virginia)
in singles, along with the doubles teams of Darrin
Cohen/Stewart (Virginia), Alex Cojanu/Billy Mulligan (William
and Mary) and Devvarman/Huey.
All-State teams are selected by active members of the Virginia
Sports Information Directors Association.
