CNU’s Bailey Named College Baseball
Player of the Year
Shenandoah’s Nelson & Anderson Named Rookie & Coach of the
Year
NEWPORT
NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport University’s Trae Bailey was
named the 2009 College Division Baseball Player of the Year
while Shenandoah’s Cory Nelson was named Rookie of the Year and
his Coach, Kevin Anderson, was named Coach of the Year, the
Virginia Sports Information Directors announced.
2009 VaSID College Division Baseball All-State Team
Bailey, the USA South’s
Player of the Year, hit .404 with 63 hits, 55 runs, nine home
runs, and 44 RBI, all tops on the squad. He was a First Team
All-USA South pick and a First Team All-South Region selection
by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Bailey was also a
First Team All-State selection in 2008.
Nelson, a freshman from
Portsmouth, VA, hit .346 with 54 hits, 47 runs, eight home runs
and 44 RBI. He was an ABCA All-Region choice and was also named
All-Conference. Nelson was selected to the Salisbury Regional
All-Tournament team and was named USA South Rookie Player or
Pitcher of the Week three times. He was also 1-0 on the mound
with three appearances, tossing 11 innings and striking out
seven.
Anderson led Shenandoah
to a 38-10 record, setting a new school record for wins in a
season as his squad finished the year ranked sixth in the
nation. He was named the 2009 ABCA South Region Coach of the
Year and guided his Hornets to the school’s first ever NCAA
World Series appearance.
