Virginia's Lieb & Weymouth, Richmond's Murphy
Honored by VaSID
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Virginia's Nikki Lieb was named the
VaSID Women's Lacrosse Player of the Year while teammate Blair
Weymouth was tabbed as the Rookie of the Year by the
organization as announced today. Richmond head coach Sue
Murphy was also honored by VaSID as the Coach of the Year
after leading the Spiders to a second consecutive Atlantic-10
Tournament title and berth in the NCAA Tournament.
2006 VaSID University Division Women's Lacrosse All-State Team
Lieb and Weymouth were joined by three teammates on the VaSID
Women's Lacrosse All-State Team (University Division) while
four of Murphy's charges were also named to the first team.
The Cavaliers led all schools with eight players named to the
two teams, including Tyler Leachman, Julie Hauser, and Kim
Connors, all of whom joined Lieb and Weymouth on the first
team. The Spiders had six players honored, including Jackie
Swansburg, the goalie on the first team.
Joining Swansburg on the first team were Samantha Tract, Caroline
McGuire, and Mandy Friend. James Madison claimed five players,
including Kelly Berger and Kylee Dardine, both of whom were on
the first team. Virginia Tech's Lindsey Peiper was named to
the first team while two teammates were honored on the second
team. William & Mary had two honorees, Kristen Wong and
Colleen Dalon, both of whom were named to the second team.
Lieb was a Tewaaraton Trophy finalist and was named the
National Defensive Midfielder of the Year by
insidelacrosse.com. She was a consensus first-team
All-American for the third consecutive year and also was named
All-ACC and All-ACC Tournament for the third consecutive year
as well. Lieb led the Cavaliers in draw controls (43) and
caused turnovers (24) and was second in ground balls (44).
Weymouth was consensus National Rookie of the Year after
earning the nod from both womenslacrosse.com and
insidelacrosse.com. She ranked second on the team in scoring
with 49 goals and 21 assists and ranked fourth in draw
controls.
Murphy led the Spiders to their second consecutive A-10 title
and a program-high ranking of No. 9 nationally, the highest
ranking in school history after defeating Virginia 8-7 in
March. Murphy coached two All-Americans (Caroline McGuire and
Mandy Friend) in 2006.
All-State teams are selected by active members of the Virginia
Sports Information Directors Association.
