Hathorn, Barker Lead '07 VaSID Women’s Lax Picks

WINCHESTER, Va. – Mary Washington attack Kaitlyn Barker and Washington & Lee head coach Jan Hathorn lead the 2007 Virginia State Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Division All-State women’s lacrosse team in selections announced Wednesday by the organization.

Barker earns state Player of the Year honors after scoring 82 goals and dishing out nine assists for 91 points on the season. The Kennebunk, Maine native had eight goals in a NCAA Tournament game against Babson and was named first team All-Capital Athletic Conference, first team All-Atlantic South and third team All-American.

Longtime Washington & Lee head coach Jan Hathorn caps her illustrious career by earning VaSID Coach of the Year honors. Hathorn, who is set to become the school’s new athletic director in July, finished her 19th and final season at the helm of the Generals with a 15-4 record and having led the team to its fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

The final major honor, Rookie of the Year, goes to Lynchburg’s Kathryn Ollice. Ollice earned second team All-ODAC honors earlier this spring for the Hornets after scoring 49 points on 40 goals and nine assists.

Barker is one of four Eagles named to the 24-woman VaSID All-State team. Fellow attack Caitlin Erickson, midfielder Meaghan O’Leary and defender Kate Lyons all join Barker on the first team.

Those four selections also put Mary Washington in a group of eight schools with multiple selections to the team. Of the eight, W&L leads with way with five total selections. Kelly Evans, Megan Slosson and Kat Michaels earned first team honors with Maggie Megear and Sarah Tilbor both grabbing spots on the second team.

Christopher Newport, the USA South Conference champion, had three players selected while Lynchburg, Randolph-Macon, Roanoke, Shenandoah and Virginia Wesleyan all had two players on the squad. Ferrum and Bridgewater, with one each, round out the 10 schools with women on the team.

All-State teams are selected by active members of the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association.  For more information, please visit the VaSID site at http://www.ferrum.edu/athletics/vasid.
