- Feenstra, Hendrickson Garner Top
University Women's Basketball Awards

- NORFOLK, VA – Liberty junior Katie Feenstra
has been selected as the 2003-04 VaSID Division I Women’s
Basketball Player of the Year, voted by the sports information
directors from around the state. Bonnie Hendrickson, head coach
of Virginia Tech, was selected as the Coach of the Year.

- In helping lead the Lady Flames to the Big
South Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament
first round, Feenstra (pictured above left) was named the Big
South Player of the Year for the second consecutive year and the
Advance Auto Parts Big South Tournament MVP for the second year
in a row. Feenstra averaged a double-double for the season,
averaging 21.1 points and 11.0 rebounds a game, while posting 21
double-doubles during the season. During the 2003-04 season, she
became only the ninth Liberty player ever to reach the 1,000
point milestone, and the fourth to score 1,000 points and grab
500 rebounds.

- Bonnie Hendrickson (above right) was named the
2003-04 VaSID Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year, after
leading Virginia Tech to the NCAA Second Round and a 23-8
record. During the course of the year, the Hokies played nine
schools that made it to the NCAA Tournament before defeating
Iowa in the first round of the Tournament and dropping a second
round game to Penn State. Virginia Tech won 20 games this year
for the seventh straight year under Hendrickson.

- This year’s All-State Team has several new
faces, with only four of the 10 total players being selected to
the 2002-03 team. Katie Feenstra is on the first team for the
second consecutive year, while the University of Richmond’s
Kate Flavin and George Mason’s Jen Derevjanik moved up to the
first team this year after making it to the second team last
year. Hampton’s Nicole Brathwaite and Virginia Commonwealth’s
Cyndy Wilks are making their first appearance on the all-state
team, both making this year’s first team. On the second team,
only Virginia Tech’s Ieva Kublina has previously been named to
the all-state team, making the first team in 2002-03. Old
Dominion’s Monique Coker and Max Nhassengo are making their
first appearances, as are George Mason’s Vernessa Neamo and
Hampton’s Saona Chapman.
