Randolph-Macon’s Silva, LaHaye Earn Top State Women's Basketball Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Randolph-Macon College’s Megan Silva was named the 2005-06 Virginia Sports Information Directors College Division State Player of the Year, while Carroll LaHaye was named the State’s Coach of the Year.

Both Silva and LaHaye repeat as the State’s Player and Coach of the Year, respectively. Silva also won the award in 2003-2004. She was named the Division III National Player of the Year and Jostens Trophy winner.
She averaged 23 points, shot 57% from the field for the year, 46% from behind the arc, 83% from the free throw line and dished out 189 assists on the year. She’s also a three-time ODAC Player of the Year, a four-time First Team All-ODAC selection, and named MVP of the ODAC Tournament three times. She was also named the D3hoops.com’s South Region Player of the Year, selected to the First Team All-Region four times, and a two-time First Team All-American choice.  She was also honored as the National Player of the Year in D3News, and was Richmond Times-Dispatch women’s state Player of the Year. Silva finishes as the school’s leader in scoring, assists, and steals.

LaHaye was named the South Region’s Coach of the Year by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). Her team finished the year with a 28-3 record overall and advanced to the Elite 8 for the second consecutive season. She also guided her squad to a 22-game winning streak and its second straight ODAC tournament championship.

Joining Silva on the First Team All-State squad was Bridgewater’s Marsha Kinder. Kinder averaged 17.7 points per game, shot 44% from the field, 43% from behind the arc. She ranked No. 13 in the nation in three-pointers made per game and 15th in the three-point field goal percentage. She was a First Team All-ODAC selection, a First Team Academic All-American and a Second Team All-South Region choice by D3hoops.com and was a First Team All-Region choice by the WBCA.

Also on the First Team was Marymount’s Randi Jones. Jones finished the year averaging 14 points and five rebounds. She was named the Capital Athletic Conference’s Player of the Year and led the team in scoring, assists, steals and three-pointers.

Christopher Newport’s Candace Bryant joins Silva as the only repeat First Team choices from a year ago. Bryant finished the year averaging a double-double for the second consecutive season, averaging 13.8 points and 10 rebounds per game while shooting 45% from the field. She was a First Team All-USA South selection and a Third Team All-South Region choice.

Rounding out the First Team was Ferrum College’s Aline Alzime. The junior forward led the Panthers with 15.6 points and 8.9 rebounds and shot 44% from the field. She was a First Team All-USA South choice for the second straight year. She was also named to the USA South All-Tournament Team.
