Washington and Lee’s Anne Van Devender Named
VaSID Women’s Soccer Player of the Year
Lynchburg’s Olsen, Roanoke’s
Benne Share Coach of the Year Honors
FERRUM, Va. – Washington and Lee University junior forward Anne
Van Devender has been named Player of the Year on the 2007
College Division Women’s Soccer All-State Team, named by the
Virginia Sports Information Directors.

Lynchburg College freshman forward Betsy Kwiatkowski has been
named Rookie of the Year, while Lynchburg’s Dr. Todd Olsen and
Roanoke College’s Phil Benne have been named Co-Coaches of the
Year.
Van Devender scored 40 points this year on 15 goals and 10
assists. She had one game-winning goal. Van Devender was an
All-Conference first team selection and the 2007 ODAC Player of
the Year.
Kwiatkowski notched 22 goals and 10 assists for 54 points in her
first year with Lynchburg. She was an All-Conference first team
selection for the Hornets as well as the 2007 ODAC Rookie of the
Year.
Benne led Roanoke to an 18-4-1 record this season and was named
ODAC Coach of the Year. His Maroons qualified as an at-large
team into the 2007 NCAA Division III tournament. Roanoke
finished second in the ODAC regular season standings with a 10-1
league mark.
Olsen led the Hornets to a 19-4-3 record and the 2007 ODAC
Tournament title. The Hornets then won three games in the NCAA
Tournament to advance to the national quarterfinals, making
Lynchburg’s second Elite Eight appearance.
Virginia Wesleyan College led the three first-team with three
selections; midfielder Laura Jackson, defender Courtney Benitez
and goalkeeper Lindsey Williams. Washington and Lee defender
Marisa Van Brunt joined Van Devender on the first team, while
Lynchburg defender Lauren Askey joined Kwiatkowski. Roanoke had
two first team selections, forward Kristin McCoy and midfielder
Meredith Grunewald, and Christopher Newport University had two
first team selections, midfielder Sam Ciaravino and defender
Emily Chesbro.
All-State teams are selected by active members of the Virginia
Sports Information Directors Association. For more
