Clemmons Named Football Player of the Year
Shenandoah’s Paul Barnes Named Coach of
the Year
LEXINGTON, Va. – Hampden-Sydney senior
running back CW Clemmons (Covington, Va.)
was named the 2004 Virginia College Division Football Player of
the Year, while Shenandoah Head Coach Paul Barnes was named
the Coach of the Year in voting conducted by the Virginia Sports
Information Directors Association.

Clemmons earned the Player of the Year award after posting ODAC
Offensive Player of the Year and State Division II/III Player of
the Year honors from the Richmond Times Dispatch. A three-time
First Team All-ODAC pick, Clemmons finished his career as the
Tigers’ all-time leading rusher with 3,771 yards, while also
becoming the ODAC’s all-time scoring leader with 282 points and 46
touchdowns. In 2004, Clemmons rushed for 1,098 yards on 193
carries and caught 31 passes for 366 yards in scoring 13 combined
touchdowns.
Barnes was tabbed as the Coach of the Year after guiding
Shenandoah to a 7-4 overall record, a share of the USA South
Conference title (5-1 USA South), and the school’s first NCAA
Tournament berth. Barnes was also named the 2004 USA South Coach
of the Year.
Repeat selections to the first team included Clemmons, Shenandoah
senior offensive lineman Lamont Moore (Reston, Va.),
Bridgewater senior defensive lineman Lawrence Frierson
(Stafford, Va.), Averett senior linebacker Kelvin Hutcheson
(Bracey, Va.), Averett senior defensive back Anthony Morris
(Suffolk, Va.) and Ferrum senior defensive back Darren
Venable (Covington, Va.), a three-time first team selection.
Bridgewater led all schools with eight selections to the all-state
team, followed by Shenandoah, Emory & Henry and Washington and Lee
with five, and Hampden-Sydney with four.
The Virginia College Division members for football include The
Apprentice School, Averett University, Bridgewater College,
Christopher Newport University, Emory & Henry College, Ferrum
College, Hampden-Sydney College, Randolph-Macon College,
Shenandoah University, Virginia State University, Virginia Union
University, The University of Virginia-Wise and Washington and Lee
University.
