JMU's Cutchins Named
VaSID Field Hockey Player of the Year
UVA's Edmonds Earns Rookie Honors;
ODU's Anders Coach of the Year
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- 12 Dec 2007 - JMU sophomore netminder
Kelsey Cutchins, a 2007 first-team All-American and the CAA
Player of the Year, was named the State Field Hockey Player of
the Year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors'
Association (VaSID) today as the organization announced the
all-state teams for field hockey in the University Division.
Also honored were Virginia's Shelley Edmonds, the 2007 Rookie
of the Year, and ODU's Beth Anders, the 2007 Coach of the
Year.
2007 VaSID University Division Field Hockey All-State Team
Cutchins, who was named a first-team All-American by both the
NFHCA and womensfieldhockey.com, is the first goalkeeper in
CAA history to garner Player of the Year honors. The sophomore
ranked second in the nation in goals-against average and
helped the Dukes advance to the NCAA quarterfinals.
Edmonds, a former member of the national teams program, helped
a young Virginia side advance to the NCAA Championships while
leading the Cavaliers in the backfield. Despite starting as
many as seven underclassmen, the Hoos were able to rank in the
top-20 throughout the season.
Anders, the CAA Coach of the Year, led the Lady Monarchs to
the top seed in the CAA Tournament for the 13th time in her
career. ODU faced the seventh-toughest schedule in the nation
in 2007 and won 12 games, earning the Lady Monarchs a trip to
the NCAA Championships with an at-large bid.
James Madison led all schools with eight selections between
the two teams, including six on the first team. The Walls
triplets were all named to the first team. Old Dominion and
Virginia both had six honorees, three on each team. William &
Mary and Radford both claimed two honorees, both on the second
team.
All-State teams are selected by active members of the Virginia
Sports Information Directors Association. For more
information, please visit the VaSID site at
