CNU’s Moreland & Harvell, Shenandoah’s Van Sickler Highlight College All-State Baseball Team

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport pitcher Kenny Moreland was named College Division State Player of the Year while his coach, John Harvell, was honored as the State’s Coach of the Year and Shenandoah’s Greg Van Sickler took home Rookie of the Year honors, the Virginia Sports Information Director’s Association announced.

Moreland, a senior from Springfield, VA, led the Captains on the mound, going 13-0 with a 1.97 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 109.2 innings pitched. He was named D3baseball.com’s Pitcher of the Year. He was a First Team All-American selection by D3baseball.com and the American Baseball Coaches Association. Moreland was also honored as the South Region Pitcher of the Year and the USA South Pitcher of the Year. He was a First Team All-Region and All-USA South choice. Moreland was also the Most Valuable Player in the USA South Conference Tournament.

Van Sickler, a freshman from Stephenson, VA, was also honored as the USA South’s Rookie of the Year. He was named either the Rookie Pitcher or Rookie Player of the Week in every week this past spring but one. Van Sickler was also named First Team All-USA South and was a Second Team All-South pick by the ABCA.  He is this year's VaSID First Team selection at utility.

Harvell, who just completed his eighth season at the helm, navigated his team to a 29-14 overall record and a USA South regular season and tournament title. He was named the USA South’s Coach of the Year and led his squad back to the NCAA Regionals for the first time since 2003.

Also earning First Team All-State accolades was Ferrum’s catcher, Nick Baker. Baker hit .377 with 46 hits, five home runs and 22 RBI and named First Team All-USA South.

Lynchburg’s Jon Crews was named First Team at first base. The senior from Lynchburg, VA hit .374 with 67 hits, seven home runs and 59 RBI. He was a First Team All-South and All-ODAC selection.

Randolph-Macon’s Greg Meleski was named First Team All-State at second base. The junior from Weston, FL hit .394 with 65 hits and 40 RBI. He was a First Team All-ODAC pick and a Second Team All-South selection.

At third base, Lynchburg’s Jeff Taylor was honored by being named First Team All-State. The sophomore from Lynchburg, VA hit .392 with 65 hits, 42 RBI and helped his team earn an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. He was named First Team All-Conference and Second Team All-South.

CNU’s Trae Bailey took home First Team honors at shortstop. The junior hit a team-high .427 with 73 hits, 10 home runs and 62 RBI. He was named the USA South’s Player of the Year and was also a First Team All-Conference choice. Bailey was also named the ABCA South Region Player of the Year and First Team All-South accolades. He was also a Second Team All-American selection by both the ABCA and D3baseball.com.

In the outfield, Christopher Newport’s Eric Cole, Washington & Lee’s Terrence McKelvey, and Randolph-Macon’s Mike Wallace were all selected to the First Team.

Cole hit .331 with 49 hits, three home runs and 38 driven in. He was a First Team All-USA South choice. McKelvey hit .407 with 57 hits, seven triples, five home runs and 28 RBI. He was named First Team All-ODAC, Second Team All-South and was a First Team All-Region Gold Glove selection. Wallace led RMC with .438 average while blasting four home runs and driving in 43. He was named First Team All-ODAC and First Team All-South, helping RMC capture the ODAC Tournament title.

UVA-Wise’s Brad Robbins was named First Team All-State Designated Hitter. The sophomore from Big Stone Gap, VA hit .413 with 78 hits, 52 runs, 13 home runs and 49 RBI. He was named First Team All-AAC and First Team All-Region XII..

Joining Moreland on the First Team was is Lynchburg’s Joe Devlin. The junior from Ashburn, VA finished 9-0 with a 1.04 ERA in 69.1 innings pitched. He struck out 38 and finished with three saves. He was a First Team All-South pick and named Second Team All-ODAC.
