Cubbage, Fulk Earn College All-State Softball Honors

DANVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) selected Lynchburg College outfielder Caroline Cubbage as the Virginia State College Division Player of the Year Friday.  Meanwhile, Donnie Fulk of Bridgewater College was named the VaSID Coach of the Year among the college division (Divisions II and III).

, VA, was the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 2006, while batting .489 with 17 homers.  She was also selected as a first team All-America and All-Atlantic Region team member in 2006.  Cubbage set school records for home runs, doubles, slugging percentage, and RBIs.  She also helped lead Lynchburg to a 30-15 overall record, which included a 12-6 mark in ODAC play.

Fulk led Bridgewater to a record season in 2006.  His squad finished with a school-record 34 wins with only nine losses.  The Eagles completed the 2006 regular season in first place in 2006.  Fulk was also tabbed as the ODAC Coach of the Year following the Eagles record-setting campaign.

Shannon Harris of Emory & Henry and Becky Sowell of Va. Wesleyan were both named to the all-state first team as pitchers.  Harris, a sophomore from Hendersonville, NC, finished the season with a 2.28 ERA and 164 strikeouts.  She was a second team All-ODAC selection.  Sowell was the ODAC Pitcher of the Year with a 1.76 ERA and a 15-6 record.  She is a senior from Yorktown, VA.

Behind the plate, Laura Berry from Bridgewater was selected to the first team.  The sophomore from Richmond, VA hit .415 with 11 doubles and five homers in 2006 and was a first team All-ODAC honoree.  Kirstin Swank from Lynchburg, CNU’s Katie Moyer and C.J. McQueen, along with Lindsay Ware from Bridgewater all earned all-state infield honors.  Swank batted .353 for the Hornets, while being recognized by the ODAC as a first team performer at first base.  She is a sophomore from Bear, DE.  Moyers, who played second base for the Captains, was an all-USA South performer with 26 RBIs and a .387 batting average.  The Ruckersville, VA native was also named the USA South Conference Rookie of the Year.  Her teammate, McQueen from Farmville, VA, was tabbed the state’s top shortstop.  The senior hit .351 for the Captains with 47 hits and 13 stolen bases in 2006.  McQueen was an all-conference honorable mention in 2006.  Rounding out the infielders at third base is Ware from Madison Heights, VA.  She was a first team All-ODAC performer after belting 70 hits and tallying an average of .458 as a junior in 2006.

Joining Cubbage in the outfield on the all-state team were Kaitlyn Bowman from Bridgewater and Va. Wesleyan’s Mandy Nixon.  Bowman was a second team All-America selection and the 2006 ODAC Rookie of the Year.  The Dayton, VA freshman hit .521, had 11 homers and 66 RBIs.  Nixon was an all-conference honorable mention as a sophomore.  The Virginia Beach native held a .444 average with seven home runs and 32 RBIs.

Andrea Rohde (Billings
, MT) from CNU was named to the all-state team as a utility player.  She started in various positions on the field in all 40 games for the Captains.  She hit .378 on the season with 27 RBIs.  Rohde was also a member of the All-USA South Conference first team as a senior in 2006.  Lynchburg’s Brittany Edelen rounds out the all-state first team at the designated player position.  She was a third team All-American with six homers and 44 RBIs.  Edelen is a senior from Aquasco, MD.
