HARRISONBURG, Va. --
Ninety-eight collegiate athletes throughout the state were
honored for their achievements both in athletic competition
and in the classroom as the Virginia Sports Information
Directors (VaSID) announced the 2005-06 Academic All-State
Awards on Monday, June 19.
2005-06 VaSID Academic All-State Team
The VaSID All-State winners were nominated by their school and
voted upon by sports information directors at all member
institutions. The Academic All-State recognition is the only
honor handed out by the organization that includes athletes
from all NCAA institutions in Division I, II, and III as well
as NAIA schools. In order to be eligible, the student-athlete
must be a starter or key reserve who has reached sophomore
eligibility status and has a 3.20 or better grade point
average. The First, Second, and Third teams consist of the
top 11 athletes, including ties.
Among the VaSID Academic All-State First Team Honorees are
James Madison University women’s soccer player Kim Argy,
Radford University men’s soccer player Patrick Colas, Eastern
Mennonite University field hockey player Jonalyn Denlinger,
Old Dominion University field hockey player Janelle Engle, Old
Dominion University field hockey player Mary Cate Gordon,
Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey and lacrosse player
Kristen Jehl, Bridgewater College women’s basketball player
Marsha Kinder, James Madison University football player Matt
Magerko, Eastern Mennonite University men’s soccer player Adam
Shank, Randolph-Macon College women’s basketball player Megan
Silva, Virginia Tech softball player Angela Tincher, and
Virginia Wesleyan College baseball player Brent Vuyovich.
Eleven of the 12 First Team members are seniors, with Tincher
the lone sophomore of the group. All 12 have at least a 3.65
GPA and nine of the 12 have a 3.89 or
better. All-State teams are selected by active members
of the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association.
