SINGLETARY, GREENBERG, ANDERSON HEADLINE 2008 UNIVERSITY ALL-STATE MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM

FARMVILLE, Va. --
University of Virginia guard Sean Singletary has been selected as Player of the Year, Virginia Tech head coach Seth Greenberg is the Coach of the Year, and University of Richmond guard Kevin Anderson was picked as the Rookie of the Year in voting by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID) for the 2008 University Division All-State Men's Basketball Team.

Singletary
, a 6-0 senior from Philadelphia, averaged 19.8 points, 6.1 assists, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.8 steals while shooting 43% from the field, including 37% on three-point field goals (58), and 85% at the free throw line.  He led the Cavaliers to a 17-16 record while earning All-ACC 1st-Team honors for the third consecutive season, as well as NABC All-District 5, USBWA All-District III, Richmond Times-Dispatch State Player of the Year, along with being a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award and the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.  Singletary is one of only three players in ACC history to have 2,000 points, 500 assists, and 400 rebounds in a career, and he scored in double-figures a school-record 53-straight games, including a career-high 41 points at Miami (Fla.) this past season as Virginia advanced to the post-season CBI Semifinals.

Greenberg
led Virginia Tech to a 21-14 record, including 9-7 in the ACC, as the Hokies advanced to the post-season NIT Quarterfinals.  He was selected as this year’s ACC Coach of the Year as well after Tech surprisingly finished fourth in the league during the regular season.  The Hokies won the Aeropostale Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden in late December, defeating both Hofstra (84-59) and St. John’s (54-48).

Anderson
, a 5-11 freshman from Duluth, Georgia, averaged 10.7 points, 3.0 assists, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.8 steals while shooting 39% from the field, including 30% on three-point field goals (33), and 82% at the free throw line.  He led the Spiders to a 16-15 record while earning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and A-10 All-Rookie Team honors, as well as being named the A-10 Rookie of the Week six times during the season as UR advanced to the post-season CBI First Round.

Singletary, the only unanimous choice, was joined on the VaSID 1st-Team by junior Eric Maynor of VCU, senior Will Thomas of George Mason, junior A.D. Vassallo of Virginia Tech, and senior Reggie Williams of VMI.  Maynor averaged 17.9 points, 5.5 assists, and 4.2 rebounds for the Rams (24-8).  Thomas posted a double-double average of 16.1 points and 10.4 rebounds, adding 2.0 assists for the Patriots (23-11); the only Virginia team that advanced to this year’s post-season NCAA Tournament.  Vassallo averaged 16.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists for the Hokies.  Williams led the nation in scoring for the second-straight year at 27.8 points, adding 9.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists for the Keydets (14-15).

The VaSID 2nd-Team includes Alex McLean of Liberty (15.8 points, 8.8 rebounds), Tony Murphy of Norfolk State (17.9 points, 3.1 rebounds), Jamal Shuler of VCU (15.5 points, 4.7 rebounds), Deron Washington of Virginia Tech (13.1 points, 6.5 rebounds), and Kirk Williams of Longwood (16.9 points, 6.5 rebounds).  Honorable mention honors went to Jeff Allen of Virginia Tech, TeeJay Bannister of Liberty, Folarin Campbell of George Mason, Brandon Johnson of Old Dominion, and Rashad West of Hampton.
