Shenandoah’s
Lawrence Named College Men's Basketball Player of the Year,
Ferrum’s Mitchell Rookie of the Year
W&L’s Hutchinson Takes Home Coach of the Year
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Virginia Sports Information Directors
Association (VaSID) has announced that
Shenandoah’s Jeremiah Lawrence
was named the Men’s Basketball College Division’s State Player
of the Year, Ferrum’s Derek
Mitchell took home Rookie of the Year honors and
Washington & Lee’s Adam
Hutchinson was named Coach of the Year.
2008 VaSID College Division Men's Basketball All-State Team
Lawrence, a senior forward from Forestville, MD, averaged 20.2
points and 11.2 rebounds per game. He was a 2008 NABC Third
Team All-American. Street & Smith Magazine and the Sporting
News named him a 2007 Pre-Season All-American. Lawrence
finished his career as the school’s all-time leading rebounder
and was named the USA South’s Player of the Year. He was named
Second Team All-South by D3hoops.com and was a First Team
All-South choice by the NABC.
Mitchell, a freshman from Newport News, VA, averaged almost 13
points and 11 rebounds per outing. He, along with Lawrence,
were the only two USA South players to average a double-double
for the 2007-2008 season. Mitchell was named the 2008 USA
South Rookie of the Year and was a Second Team All-USA South
selection. Mitchell was also honored as D3hoops.com’s South
Region Rookie of the Year.
Hutchinson guided the Generals to a
15-11 overall record and an 11-7 mark in the Old Dominion
Athletic Conference. He was honored as the ODAC’s Coach of the
Year. Hutchinson led Washington & Lee to its best season since
1989-1990. The 11 wins in conference play were the most for
W&L since 1981-1982.
Joining Lawrence on the First Team were
Christopher Newport’s Davon
Barton,
Washington & Lee’s Greg Bienemann,
VA Wesleyan’s Tyler Fantin
and Hampden-Sydney’s Turner
King.
Barton, a junior guard, finished the year averaging 18 points
per game. He led the USA South in assists with 187 (7.2 per
game). He went over the 1,000-point mark and was named First
Team All-USA South. Barton was also a Second Team All-South
Region selection by D3hoops.com.
Bienemann, a senior forward, averaged 21.5 points and 7
rebounds and shot 59% from the floor. He was a First Team
All-ODAC choice and a Third Team All-South pick by D3hoops.com
and was a 2008 finalist for the Jostens Award.
Fantin, another senior forward, averaged a career-high 15.5
points and 8 rebounds. He was named Second Team All-South by
the NABC and was a Third Team All-Region pick by D3hoops.com.
Fantin was also selected to the First Team All-ODAC squad.
Finally, King, a sophomore guard, led the Tigers in scoring,
averaging 19 points per game. Shot 49% from the field and 40%
from behind the arc. King was named First Team All-ODAC in
2008.
All-State teams are selected by active members of the Virginia
