Virginia's Huffman, Swanson Nab Women’s Soccer All-State Top Honors

RICHMOND, Va.
 – The University of Virginia’s senior midfielder Sarah Huffman and head coach Steve Swanson were named the 2005 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State University Division Player of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively, for the second straight year.

Huffman, who received the 2004 VaSID Player of the Year Honor as well, had another standout year with the Cavaliers after scoring four goals, two of which were game-winners, in addition to grabbing eight assists for a total of 16 points.  Also a member of the United States Under 21 National Team, Huffman was named a 2005 NSCAA Third Team All-American, a 2005 Hermann Trophy Semifinalist, a 2005 SoccerBuzz National Player of the Year Finalist, as well as being named to the 2005 NSCAA All-Mid Atlantic Region First Team and the 2005 ACC All-Tournament Team.

Coach Swanson, who was named the VaSID Coach of the Year last year, had another extremely notable year as he led the Cavaliers to a No. 6 National Ranking with an 18-6-1 overall record, finishing second in the ACC with an 8-2 conference record, in addition to carrying his team to the NCAA Quarterfinals for just the third time in Virginia’s history and the ACC Finals for the second consecutive season.  Swanson also guided his team to tying the school record with 18 wins, setting a school record with eight conference wins, and tying the school record with 14 shutouts.

Joining Huffman on the All-State First Team are James Madison’s Kim Argy (Oak Hill, Va.) at forward, Old Dominion’s Laura Beeman (Chalfont, Pa.) at forward, Virginia Commondwealth’s Sandra Anger (Cuguen, France) at midfield, Liberty University’s Rachel Bendzlowicz (Holland, Pa.) at defense and Tanya Payne (Prescott, Ariz.) at defender, as well as Richmond’s Hillary Prince (Plano, Texas) at defense.  Five Virginia players took spots on the First Team, including Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio) at forward, Huffman at midfield, Noelle Keselica (Gaithersburg, Md.) at midfield, Becky Sauerbrunn (Saint Louis, Mo.) at defense, and Christina de Vries (Westlake Village, Calif.) at goalkeeper.

Comprising the Second Team are James Madison’s Annie Lowry (Butler, Pa.) at forward and Jessica Hussey (Kanata, Ontario) at goalkeeper, Virginia Commonwealth’s Stephanie Power (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) at forward, Hedda Gardsjord (Oslo, Norway) at defense, and Jennifer Woodie (Woodbridge, Va.) at defense, William and Mary’s Claire Zimmeck (Fairfax, Va.) at forward, Richmond’s Jessie Wolfe (Germantown, Md.) at midfield, and Longwood’s Melissa Cary (Bristow, Va.) at defense.  Rounding out the Second Team are Virginia’s Kelly Hammond (Bowie, Md.) at midfield, Jen Redmond (Morristown, N.J.) at midfield, and Nikki Krzysik (Clifton, N.J.) at defense.
