2005 University Division All-State Football Team Announced
Vick, Tapp, Terrell, Clawson Nab Top Honors

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech quarterback Marcus Vick and Hokie defensive lineman Darryl Tapp Tuesday were named Virginia’s Division I offensive and defensive football players of the year, respectively, by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID).  Also Tuesday, the group named Liberty’s Zach Terrell the state Division I rookie of the year and Richmond’s Dave Clawson the state’s Division I coach of the year.

Tapp earlier received the Dudley Award as Virginia’s Division I player of the year and was named state defensive player of the year by the Roanoke Times.  Vick also was named state Division I offensive player of the year by the Roanoke Times.  Terrell earlier was named freshman of the year in the Big South Conference, and Clawson was coach of the year in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

A senior, Tapp was a first-team All-America honoree by the national football coaches association and a second-team pick by Associated Press, and he was a first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference choice.  Among has 45 tackles in 2005, 12.5 have been for losses, and he has had 10 quarterback sacks and 34 quarterback hurries.

Vick in 2005 has thrown for 2,190 yards and 15 touchdowns and has run for 370 yards and six scores.  He led the Atlantic Coast Conference in passing efficiency and was first-team all-conference.

Terrell in 2005 worked as both a reserve quarterback and running back, and he finished the season with 668 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns and 17 receptions.  He set a team freshman season rushing yards record and in his first running back start had a 241-yard rushing effort.

Clawson led Richmond to a share of the Atlantic 10 title, and the Spiders advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs while posting a 9-4 record.  Richmond was 1-3 after four games, and the Spiders were coming off a 3-8 season in 2004.

Sports information directors from university and college division programs throughout Virginia took part in voting for their association’s top awards, and they also named all-state first and second teams.

Virginia Tech led the overall voting with 11 players named to the two all-state teams.  James Madison had nine selections, Hampton eight, Richmond and Virginia six each, Virginia Military Institute five, William & Mary three, and Liberty two.

Six players were repeat selections to the all-state first team, and another 2005 first-team choice also was a first-team honoree in 2003.  The repeat choices on offense included Hampton running back Alonzo Coleman, James Madison guard Matt Magerko and Virginia tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson.  Virginia Tech tackle Jimmy Martin was a first-team selection in 2003 and again in 2005.  Repeat honorees on defense included Tapp, James Madison defensive back Tony LeZotte and Virginia Tech defensive back Jimmy Williams.
