Virginia’s Sauerbrunn & Jones, JMU’s Lombardo Earn VaSID Women’s Soccer Honors

RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia senior defender Becky Sauerbrunn was named VaSID Women’s Soccer Univeristy Division Player of the Year and Cavalier red-shirt freshman goalkeeper Chantel Jones was named the state’s Rookie of the Year in voting conducted among members of the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID).  James Madison’s Dave Lombardo was named the state’s Coach of the Year in the same voting.

Sauerbrunn anchored a Cavalier defense that led the nation with a 0.40 goals against average and posted a school record 15 shutouts. She was named the 2007 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and First-Team All-ACC. The three-time All-American, who was on the preseason Hermann Trophy Watch List, started all 23 matches for Virginia with one goal, three assists and five points.

Jones was the keeper for the nation-leading Virginia defense, starting all 23 matches with 73 saves, an .880 save percentage and 0.41 goals against average with 13 shutouts. The second-team All-ACC selection from Midlothian, Va. ranked second nationally in goals against average and fourth in save percentage.

Lombardo led James Madison to a 17-5-1 record and a berth in the NCAA second round. The 17 wins were a school record and the most among Division I teams in Virginia in 2007. The 2007 CAA Coach of the Year also guided the Dukes to a school-record 15 regular-season wins and a record 12 home wins, despite losing the first-string goalkeeper in the second game of the season and the second-string keeper in the first week of October.
