At the helm of the Ferrum College men's tennis program is Head Coach Gary Holden, who also serves as Assistant Athletic Director and Sports Information Director.  In the summer of 2004, Holden was named to the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Committee.  In this capacity, he chairs the Atlantic-South Regional Ranking Committee.  Holden also chairs the ITA Atlantic-South Region ranking committee.

In his first nine seasons with the Ferrum men's tennis program, Holden has compiled a 82-70 record.  Holden has been named USA South Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year twice, in 2003 and 2006.  His 2003 and 2004 teams posted identical 15-3 records, the College's best tennis records since joining the NCAA Division III ranks in 1986.  Ferrum's men have earned 13 All-Conference and 21 Academic All-Conference awards during Holden's tenure.  Additionally, Ferrum players have earned ITA National Scholar Athlete recognition seven times.  One of Holden's players, Wilson Paine in 2007, earned Academic All-America first team honors.

Holden also serves as Assistant Athletic Director at Ferrum, and is in his 15th year as Sports Information Director.  He served a year as Acting Commissioner of the Atlantic Central Football Conference, and three years as that league's Sports Information Director.  Holden also served as President for the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) from 1998-2002, and is now in his eighth year as VaSID's webmaster.

Holden's work in intercollegiate athletics began in 1987, where he served as Head Wrestling Coach at Plymouth State University in central New Hampshire.  In four years, he produced 21 All-Conference athletes, two national qualifiers, one conference champ, and one NCAA Division III All-American.  Holden was named New England College Conference Wrestling Association Rookie Coach of the Year in 1988, and Coach of the Year in 1990.  A native of Nashua, New Hampshire, Holden and his wife Leslie reside in Ferrum with their sons Taylor and Drew.
