Second Half Surge Gives Ferrum 44-21 Football Win Over Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. -- The Panthers rolled up 586 yards in total offense en route to a 44-21 USA South football win over Shenandoah University on the road Sept. 22.  The Panthers trailed 14-10 in the second quarter, but outscored the Hornets 41-7 from there.

Of Ferrum's 586 yards in total offense, 445 came on the ground.  Shenandoah totaled 182 yards of total offense, 96 on the ground and 86 through the air.

PK Clint Slappey opened the game with an 18-yard field goal at 9:53 of the first quarter for a 3-0 Panther lead.  Shenandoah scored twice, a 6-yard run by QB Richard Glick and a 2-yard run by RB Paul Diggs to open a 14-3 lead at 13:14 of the second quarter.

QB Matt Dobson capped an 11-play, 96-yard drive with a 5-yard run to trim Shenandoah's lead to 14-10 heading into halftime.

The second half was all Ferrum as the Panthers scored 28 unanswered points before Shenandoah would find the end zone again.  Dobson scored two more rushing TDs in the third quarter, while Quinn Tibbs had another to push Ferrum's lead to 31-14 after three quarters.

DB Zack Brown picked off an errant Shenandoah pass to open the fourth quarter and raced 44 yards for a score to put Ferrum up 37-14.  The Hornets' WR Jeremy Maley hauled in a 21-yard pass from Glick two minutes later to cut Ferrum's lead to 37-21 with 12:28 left to play in the game.

Less than a minute later, Ferrum RB Mike Vann broke free for an 85-yard TD run to seal the game.  Vann had a game-high 175 yards rushing on nine carries, and hauled in three passes for 70 yards.  Dobson had 95 yards rushing and three TDs on 16 carries.  Dobson was 5-6 passing for 141 yards with no interceptions and one sack.

Diggs led Shenandoah with 100 yards and a TD on 30 carries.  Glick was 5-15 passing with two interceptions and a TD for 86 yards.  Glick threw a pair of interceptions and was sacked three times.

Ferrum returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 29, at home against USA South opponent Averett University, the defending league co-champion.  Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at W.B. Adams Stadium.
