Bullock, Mitchell Nab Player of the Week Honors

FERRUM, Va. -- Freshmen Brittney Bullock and Derek Mitchell have been named USA South Athletic Conference Women's and Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week, respectively.  The pair were instrumental in the Ferrum basketball teams both going 3-0 last week, all in USA South action.

Bullock averaged 17 points and 8.3 rebounds as Ferrum defeated Greensboro College 59-54 Jan. 22 on the road, Christopher Newport University 69-54 Jan. 26 at home, and Shenandoah University 80-52 Jan. 27 at home.  She had a career-high 22 points in the win over Shenandoah.  Bullock shot 70% from the floor, 75% from behind the arc, and 70% from the line last week.

Mitchell averaged 11.7 points and 11 rebounds over three games last week as Ferrum beat Greensboro 58-51, Christopher Newport 94-83, and Shenandoah 74-70.  In all three games, Ferrum had to come from behind to win, including a 17-0 run to close out the Greensboro game.

This is Bullock's first Rookie of the Week award this season.  For Mitchell, it is his fourth such honor.  He previously earned Rookie of the Week honors December 11, January 2 and January 7.

The Ferrum women are 9-6 overall and 7-1 in the USA South.  After opening the season 0-5, the Panthers have gone 9-1.  Coach Bryan Harvey's team is tied with Methodist University for first place in the USA South standings.  Ferrum was the preseason favorite to repeat as league champ.

The Panther men are 10-8 overall and 4-1 in league play.  Coach Bill Tharp's team is also in first place in the league standings, a half game ahead of Averett University.  Tharp's team was picked to finish last in the preseason coaches poll.

The Ferrum women return to action Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. at Peace College in Raleigh, North Carolina.  Both teams will then play at North Carolina Wesleyan College Feb. 3 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.  The women tip off at 2 p.m. against NCW, with the men to follow immediately.
