Mitchell Named Rookie of the Week

FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College freshman Derek Mitchell (Newport News, Va./Heritage) has been named Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week by the USA South Athletic Conference for his play in two games last week.

Mitchell averaged 18 points on 15-18 (.833), shooting from the floor, and 11.5 rebounds as the Panthers went 2-0.

In Ferrum's 77-62 win over Lynchburg College Dec. 4 at home, Mitchell had 19 points and 12 rebounds.  He then had 17 points, 11 rebounds, five steals and three blocked shots in a 61-55 win over Lancaster Bible College Dec. 8 on the road.

This is Mitchell's first Rookie of the Week award.  Also nominated for award were Conley Taylor of Christopher Newport University and Adam Powell of Greensboro College.  Ferrum (4-4) returns to action on December 19 at NCAA Division I opponent Winston-Salem State University.
