Ferrum Upsets Averett 3-0 in Volleyball

FERRUM, Va. -- Senior Mindy Altice had 25 kills to lead Ferrum College to a 3-0 win over Averett University in USA South volleyball action tonight at home.  Game scores were 31-29, 30-28, 30-23.  Averett is the defending USA South regular season and tournament champion.

The win snaps a 30-match, 12-year losing streak to Averett dating back to the 1995 season.  Ferrum's last win over Averett was September 10, 1995 by a score of 3-2 at the Emory & Henry College Invitational. 

Sophomore Jessica Flanagan had 19 kills to go with 10 digs tonight.  Senior Jessica Walker had 19 assists and six kills, junior Jessica Washburn had 27 assists.  Junior Lauren Thurman added 18 digs in the win.  Averett was led by Samantha Kirby's 22 kills, and Jordan Maupin's 14 digs and 12 kills.

Ferrum (13-14, 7-6 USA South) returns to action this Saturday, hosting a USA South quad meet starting at 11 a.m.  The Panthers take on Peace at 11 a.m., then face Meredith at 5 p.m.
