Slappey Sets Field Goal Record

FERRUM, Va.  -- Ferrum College sophomore place-kicker Clint Slappey (Lakeland, Fla./Kathleen) set a new school record for the longest field goal when he connected on a 47-yard attempt early in the second quarter of the Panthers' 26-23 overtime loss to Maryville College Saturday, October 6 in Maryville, Tennessee.

Trailing 17-0, Ferrum opened the second quarter with a drive that stalled just outside the red zone.  Slappey's number was called on 4th-and-5 at the Maryville 30 yard line, where he drilled a 47-yard field goal to trim the Scots lead to 17-3 at the 13:31 mark.  Slappey was also successful on two of three PAT attempts against Maryville.

The previous record holder was Bobby Corn, who booted a 45-yard field goal against Christopher Newport University in November of 2001.

Through Ferrum's first six games, Slappey has been successful in four of five field goal attempts and 14 of 19 PAT attempts.  He is currently third in scoring with 26 points.

Ferrum (3-3, 2-1 USA South) returns to action Saturday, October 13, at home against USA South rival Methodist University.  The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m. and coincides with Ferrum's Homecoming '07 Weekend.
